Trivium’s Corey Beaulieau tells me, “On the new album (In Waves) we aren’t talking about the meanings behind any of the songs or lyrics, we are just leaving everything open to interpretation by the fans.” This is a good move considering most people relate the music they love to what’s going on in their lives. “It’s great because instead of knowing what the song is about listeners can come with their own meanings for the songs. It’s been really cool because all the people over in Europe who got any advance copies of the record had really interesting takes on what the songs or specific lyrics meant to them. I don’t even know what the lyrics really mean because Matt didn’t even tell the band what most of the songs mean,” Corey continues.

I met up with Corey in the Back Stage Artist Lounge at the Rockstar Mayhem Festival in Phoenix, AZ to talk about Trivium’s first tour since 2009 and the upcoming release of their new album titled In Waves. Trivium has normally had deadlines to meet for their record releases because of booked tours. “It was nice on this one because we didn’t have to deal with that bullshit. After we finished touring for our last album we just wrote and jammed for eight months before we even went into the studio. We spent a lot of time to make sure these songs were as good as they could be,” Corey tells me while preparing for autograph signings.

With no shortage of ideas for songs, the band had to cut 30 songs down to 13. “We had the songs that knew were really strong and any song ideas that we brought in had to be as good as or better than the ones we had. There was a lot of cool stuff but it some of it just wasn’t cohesive to the rest of the songs.”

In Waves has a lot of stuff the band hasn’t tried before and it’s keeping things fresh for them. “We had a lot of time on this one to try shit, fuck shit up, make it bad, make it good, taking that time off really paid off for us,” Corey explained. They have been working on many new ways of recording. They have perfected the fast shredding they are known for but on the new album expect to hear some more melodic tunes and clean tones. Corey says, “It was hard because it was new but we tried these new things in the studio and tried to balance that with keeping the Trivium sound.”

In the beginning of August Roadrunner Records will be taking Trivium to active rock radio in hopes of taking some of the radio rock kids and bringing them over to metal. In response to radio play Corey tells me, “The whole radio thing we never really catered to that market. This record is showing a different side of us because Matt has a really good singing voice and a good screaming voice. The songs are still heavy and are going to stand out on the radio. Hopefully this converts some people to the metal cause. I want it to work out to be a gateway to broaden people’s horizons and change the view of people’s misconceptions of the metal scene.”

With technology making leaps and bounds especially in the music world I wanted to know what Corey thought about being able to record an album on a laptop. He told me, “Well I wouldn’t record an album on a laptop but it’s great for unsigned bands that don’t have much money to be able to record a demo. The bad part about it is that a lot of the studios have shut down and the budgets for recording a record have gone down. It’s a lot easier for bands to record their music but it’s harder for them to get signed because record labels don’t want to put a lot time and money into a band that may flop. Hopefully someone finds a happy medium where bands can make a living making music and not touring for ten months and coming home broke.” On the topic of downloading he says, “Downloading is great to check out new music but if you fall in love with an album you should go out and buy it to show support for your band. Thank God we have such a dedicated fan base that buys multiple copies of our albums, which is awesome.” Corey looks at his phone to find out he is late for a signing and before saying farewell he tells me there will be an In Waves release on vinyl and many other extras with the new album.

In Waves the new album from Trivium comes out August 9th and they will be on tour with the Rockstar Mayhem Festival. Trivium will also join Inflames in Europe this fall. This is a band that is ever changing and definitely one to keep your eyes and ears glued to.
