When we got Trivium guitarist Corey Beaulieu’s Random Shuffle we expected to see at least one or two Pantera songs on there. After all, this is a dude who learned to play by jamming along with records like Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display of Power. Then it dawned on us. Beaulieu probably knows those so cold he can listen to them note for note in his head and never needs to place the actual discs in a player again ― kind of the way a lot of people are with Led Zeppelin. Does anyone really need to hear “Stairway to Heaven” again before they die? We’ve yet to see it on anyone’s Random Shuffle and it certainly isn’t on Beaulieu’s list.
We also thought his iPod would contain a whole lotta Metallica, but while “The Day That Never Comes” makes an appearance, there’s nothing from a) the band’s early years or b) Load or Reload. For the answer to a), see above. For b)… let’s move on.
Another thing we noticed from Beaulieu’s iPod shuffle is that, despite all the onstage snarling, he seems to have a sense of humor, as evidenced by Dane Cook and Tenacious D tracks. And he has good metal vocabulary, referencing early classic groups like AC/DC and Rainbow, ’80s metal acts Loudness and Krokus, classic thrashers Annihilator and prog/power metal merchants Iced Earth and Nevermore. There’s even an unreleased Trivium song. The only tunes we’d lie about if this was our list are from Andy Timmons and Meatloaf, but everyone’s entitled to a bad roll of the dice. On a scale of 100, we give Beaulieu’s Random Shuffle a strong 87.
